About us

At Heart and Soul Tutoring, LLC, we believe that education is more than just academics—it's about building confidence, nurturing a growth mindset, and empowering every child to reach their full potential. We are not just tutors; we are an extension of your family, walking alongside you and your child with expertise, care, and unwavering support. What started as colleagues grew into friendship and became a shared mission—a commitment to serving children with passion, heart, and dedication.

Unlike traditional tutoring services that focus solely on grades and test scores, we take a whole-child approach, honoring each student's unique genius, background, and learning style. Through custom-tailored instruction, skill-building, and mindset coaching, we create a space where children feel safe, valued, and capable of achieving greatness.

Rachel Shin

/ Founder & Lead Educator

Education has always been my passion. I believe that every child has the ability to learn and thrive when given the right support. My goal is to help students build confidence, develop critical thinking skills, and realize their full potential through teaching practices that honor the whole child.

I earned my degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a leader in elementary education. My approach is rooted in child pedagogy and developmentally appropriate practice, recognizing that children learn best when instruction aligns with their cognitive, emotional, and social development. I emphasize hands-on, inquiry-based learning, fostering a sense of curiosity and independence in students.

With 16 years of teaching experience, I have worked in various roles across education, including as a Director of Curriculum and Instruction for K-2, a Curriculum Developer, and a Co-Author of the Lifelong Readers Phonics Curriculum. My work has focused on designing and implementing literacy programs that support foundational reading skills and a love for learning. Currently, I teach second grade in Brooklyn, where I continue to apply research-backed strategies to engage young learners and help them succeed.

I take a personalized approach to teaching—meeting each student where they are and helping them grow at their own pace. I focus on creating a supportive environment that nurtures academic growth while also building problem-solving skills, resilience, and a love for learning. Beyond academics, I strive to be a mentor, encouraging students to believe in themselves and their abilities. I am always exploring new ways to enhance the learning experience through innovative teaching strategies and curriculum development.

When I'm not teaching, you'll find me doing Pilates, reading, or exploring something new in Manhattan's backyard with my husband, two daughters, and our Maltese, Mochi.

I look forward to helping you or your child grow and succeed!
